Saturday Night Takeaway

In December 2020, ITV Studios approached Kinetic Pixel to discuss using a Virtual Audience system for Saturday Night Takeaway. The series was cut short in 2020 when the pandemic began, and the channel and the executive producers were keen to see something different – a virtual audience that looked, and felt, more like physical people in the studio than anything seen before.

It was important that the hosts, Ant and Dec, should be able to interact with, talk to, and play games with, the audience in real time. We settled on an audience of 350 which helped recreate the scale and presence of each person rather than just a grid of thousands of tiny thumbnails.

We worked closely with US-based The Famous Group who had previously delivered their Virtual Seat platform for clients including the WWE, NBA and NFL.

As well as the incredible low latency mass video calling provided by Virtual Seat, Kinetic Pixel’s expertise and experience delivering first class technology for Light Entertainment led us to add full editorial moderation, live interaction and play along voting too. This helped to give the series launch a fantastic 8.1m viewers making it the second most watched show on ITV for the entire year outside news & sport.

Kinetic Pixel are The Famous Group’s exclusive European Virtual Seat partners, offering consultancy, integration and delivery of the Virtual Seat platform.
